My new home town Douglas is famous for its all year round fairy lights. It feels like Christmas to me. During the Christmas season, there are also plenty of different Christmas trees all around town. As a central European, I miss a Christmas market, and this made me notice… there is not that ONE town Christmas tree. The one, usually on the main town square. I think symbols like this express how people see different public spaces, so I asked:
Where would you put the main Christmas tree in Douglas?
Answers varied. There was a favourite spot with the most votes, right in front of Marks&Spencer. There was a Christmas tree at that time, ‘a’ Christmas tree, one of many. It is a popular meeting point in town, and it sits right on the main shopping street.
I liked some of the other ideas, on the Promenade, close to the beach, at the Villa Marina Gardens (I think one could place a big big big Christmas tree there).
The other questions I asked were about the best places for a date, underrated places or hidden gems of the town and the best spots to sit and enjoy a takeaway coffee.
Many people loved seeing the map itself, some said they have never seen Douglas on a map like that. I liked that they saw the map more fun than nerdy :)
